What is National Voter Registration Day? Why is it Important?

National Voter Registration Day is observed by Americans, to celebrate our right to vote and interact with our unique democracy! In preparation for Election Day, National Voter Registration Day is used by organizations to work in a concerted effort to register eligible citizens to vote. And every September, since 2012, Americans have celebrated this day and worked together as a community to raise awareness about the necessity of civic engagement and exercising our right to vote.

Why Should I Register to Vote?

No matter your socioeconomic status, ethnicity, religious background, or beliefs, all American citizens (18 years or older) have the right to vote on Election Day- This is a luxury not every person in the world has! By casting your vote, you’re ensuring that you have a say in who represents you and your local community on all levels of government; whether it be local, state, or federal. It’s crucial that all Americans know they have a say in decisions that can affect their everyday lives. Ensure that your voice is heard and stand up for what you believe in!

Even if you aren’t going to be 18 by Election Day 2024 (Tuesday, November 5th), if you’re at least 16 years of age, you can preregister to vote NOW for our next election! The ability to preregister to vote ensures that our American youth can start their civic engagement journey early and live the rest of their lives as informed members of society.

So if you haven’t already, celebrate National Voter Registration Day with us- and register to vote! If you’re a resident of California 16 years or older, please visit registertovote.ca.gov to register or preregister to vote today!
